Blogging the Belinda Quilt: Finishing Touches

Welcome to the final installment of the Blogging the Belinda Quilt series as we walk through tips and inspiration to make this giant hexagon quilt. In previous weeks, we’ve looked at some simple ways to make pieced hexagons, and some ideas to spice it up with some trickier arrangements.

In this final blog, we’ll look at how the border might change to accommodate the aesthetic of the pieced hexagons, and some quilting tips.

Because the border is so scrappily pieced, you might think there’s no need to change anything up, but as you are going through your scraps to use in the pieced hexagons, you will likely run across fabrics that didn’t make it into the hexagons themselves but deserve a spot in the border. The benefit of that is you can create enough length for the pieced border, you might want to frame the entire center of the quilt with the pieced border rather than just the two sides as outlined in the pattern. Remember to get extra background fabric to accommodate the additional two outer border pieces as required, too.

Once you have that top assembled, it’s time to come up with your quilting plan of action. In our original sample for the cover quilt for the Belinda quilt pattern, the hexagons were custom quilted with different motifs. For this particular version of the Belinda quilt, I took advantage of the solid fabrics to quilt hearts in those open spaces, and filled in the rest of the center with a meander design.

Once I got to the fill-in border, I used my walking foot to follow the shape of the outside of the hexagon assembly, and then did straight line quilting around the pieced and outer borders.

Hopefully you’ve been inspired to give some pieced hexagons (or whole ones as in the original pattern!) a go. You can get a copy of the digital quilt pattern for the Belinda quilt at our shop!

Introducing the Emilio Quilt Pattern

We are very excited to announce our newest quilt pattern: the Emilio quilt! This lap sized version (69 x 69″) uses basic quilt units set on point for a dynamic layout.

The fabrics we used for the cover quilt are from the Paloma fabric line by Junebee for Ink & Arrow Fabrics. This is a color-rich collection of gorgeous prints inspired by the designs of Emilio Pucci (hence the name).  I used this fabulous Italian fashion icon for inspiration in the quilt design; you can see more in the Emilio Quilt Pinterest board we have for this pattern for some of the inspiration!

The fabrics from the Paloma line have very similar value, which really blends the boundaries between the quilt units. To get a better idea of the quilt design with stronger contrast, here’s a gray scale version in the alternate baby size (52 x 52″).

The fabric requirements for the lap-sized pattern are perfect for a 5 yard bundle plus 2 yards of background fabric. You find out more about the fabric requirements and the Emilio digital quilt pattern itself in our shop.

The Value of Value in the Emilio Quilt

When we make a quilt pattern, we typically end up with three different version of it; the cover quilt, the “alternate ending”, and the shop sample that can be used in a trunk show for local quilt shops.

I wanted to show the shop sample for the Emilio quilt because it’s always interesting to see a pattern in yet another fabric range.  The cover quilt for Emilio had very little difference in value; the alternate ending baby size was nothing but value contrast as done in gray scale.

So here’s what the shop sample that falls between those two extremes looks like:

For shop samples, you want to use fabric that the shop actually carries, if at all possible.  Our LQS carries the Pat Sloan line Sunday Drive from Moda, so we complemented that with a solid lime green for the background.

Of course, using a solid in this pattern for the background, compared to the original cover quilt with a print in that area, means you can focus on showing off a quilting design.

One of the common themes in our “How would you quilt this?” segments is drawing quilting inspiration from the motifs of the fabrics themselves, and that’s exactly what I did here.  I freehand sketched the flower shape with a water-soluble pen, and then went over it with two lines of stitching in a contrasting thread.

Check out the digital download of the Emilio quilt pattern yourself and get stitching!

Blog Hopping with Christa Watson and the Kites Quilt

I’m very excited that our friend Christa Watson has a new book, Piece and Quilt with Precuts! Christa is an awesome teacher and all around great cheerleader for quilting and modern quilts. Her new book focuses on both using precut fabrics of all sizes and how exactly to quilt those quilts. Taking the guesswork out of that step can be quite liberating, as we’ve seen on our “How Should I Quilt This?” episodes of the show.

To help Christa celebrate, we’re participating in her blog hop, and have made a version of the Kites quilt. The original pattern uses a 10″ full layer cake, 5″ charm pack, and 2 1/2″ square pack plus background fabric and to make a queen sized quilt. I scaled it down a bit to make a lap size with only 9 blocks.

The quilting uses two different designs: one in the background and one in the precut fabrics. My favorite of the two is the Packed Flowers design in the purple background, which you can see in this close-up!

You can see the other versions of the Kites quilt and all the quilts in the book by visiting Christa’s master post for the blog hop. Some of the other blog hoppers are hosting giveaways, so check them all out!

To get your own copy of the book, you can get a copy directly from Christa’s store (which she’ll autograph!), Amazon, or check your local quilt shop!

Check out the Main Squeeze Quilt Pattern!

We are happy to introduce our latest quilt pattern, Main Squeeze!  Lynn designed this precut friendly quilt to use a 10″ layer cake as setting triangles for the “squeeze” block.   When Pam got hold of it, she wanted to use a jelly roll for the center strips, so now you can get both versions in the same pattern!

The cover quilt is Lynn’s original layer cake design with yardage of 3 different fabrics:

The cover quilt, made with 10″ square precuts, comes out to 80 x 72″.

When Pam got her hands on it, the version she designed with 2 1/2″ strips comes out to a nice lap size at 59 x 65″:

Check out the Main Squeeze digital pattern for fabric requirements for either version, and get stitching!
